Local Attractions and facilities

You may find most days you just  want to sit out on your verandah to enjoy the view (or the stars at night) and listen to the river, or in the Spring the curlews flying overhead, while you savour a drink, read that book you’ve been meaning to read, or triumph over the crossword..
 
If you’re feeling enrgetic, however, you’re in the middle of some of the best walking, riding and cycling country in Britain – or anywhere else for that matter. It’s only ten minutes by car  to Allendale, well-known as a walking and riding centre, or to the National Trust’s gorge walks at Allen Banks, or just 15 minutes to Hadrian’s Wall, a World Heritage Site. It’s a healthy way to lap up the area’s remarkable history.

If  golf’s your game  there are plenty of local courses within easy reach, and the highly rated courses at Matfen Hall and Slaley Hall are just half an hour away.

And there’s fishing available on a local fishing lake or in the River West Allen – brown trout all year with sea trout and salmon in the early autumn (the Estate owns several miles of riverbank).

Want to venture further afield? That’s half the beauty of Parmontley Hall. Due to our location at the middle of England, we’re in the middle of nowhere , but also right at the centre of things. So it’s under an hour to Ullswater and  the Lakes if you head west or to  Newcastle’s vibrant Quayside and the shops of the Metro Centre to the east.

For shopping closer to home, there’s a good village store in Whitfield,  and more shops in Allendale and Alston, while for supermarkets, Tescos and Waitrose are 20 minutes away in Hexham, voted England’s Favourite Market Town in 2006.
